About Us

The official blog of Network Toaster.

About Us:

Open source software is changing the landscape of information technology by providing us with professional-grade solutions without the acquisition expense and administration costs of draconian licensing schemes. However, not everyone that wants an open source solution has time to source or build their own hardware from scratch. Open source projects usually include community supported HCLs (Hardware Compatibility Lists) that try to assist users with choosing the proper hardware for their open source solutions. However, these lists usually contain mostly legacy hardware and do not give you a clear indication of how the hardware will scale.

Out of this need formed Network Toaster. We take the time to engineer the proper components for each open source solution and sell it as a network "appliance". Each appliance is custom built to our specifications by a trusted rack mount server manufacturer using non-proprietary hardware so you can extend or re-purpose the systems. Our goal is provide open source solutions a more smooth transition to the marketplace.

  1. One has to wonder: if you are buying an appliance are you more interested in staying on the bleeding edge or would it better to use an older (possibly more stable) release?

  2. For my production environment the stable and long term support release. But as a open source solutions geek I want to know when the latest and greatest is out so I can find out what new features it has to offer. I also want to play with those possible new features in my non-production environment as soon as I can.
